Retreat!!!!!!!!

I feel like we have been planning for this retreat forever!  I'm so excited to go and spend some quality time with all of you.  I think the artists in residence are also going to be inspiring.  Be thinking about what you want to do with the type truck on an individual basis.  You will have time for your group posters, as well as plenty of time to create something on your own.

The printmaker, Gabriel will be coming on Thursday to share his work with us and talk with us about how to get ready for the printmaking at the retreat.  Maybe you have a favorite photo you took this summer that you would like to reproduce in a monoprint?  Think landscapes.  We will be sketching along the way to the retreat so you don't have to have an image to bring with you.

Tuesday, your Work of Art projects are due.  Big prizes for the winner.  I'm looking forward to seeing what you have all come up with.

Don't forget to work on your cave man costume this weekend.  I gotta go start on mine.....tootles!

What is a concentration?

So what is a concentration? AP defines a concentration as, "A body of work unified by an underlying idea that has visual coherence." This weekend you will explore the Internet and find a few 'concentrations.'  You will need to follow the directions on the handout and submit it to your personal art blog. Here is an example of what I am after:

Amedeo Modigliani - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amedeo_Modigliani

Modigliani was a figure painter that elongated the form.  Clearly the majority of his work is of the human form with a focus on his muse, Jeanne Hebuterne. I have always been very taken with their story.

Jeanne met Modigliani when she was eighteen years old and she soon became his lover and muse. He painted her red hair, sinuous body and long neck many times.

She became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter. The couple were quite fond of one another and Jeanne put up with Amedeo's hedonistic lifestyle, caring for him and supporting him.

When she was nearly full term with their second child when Modigliani died. Jeanne was completely heart broken and committed suicide by walking backwards out of a top floor window. Jeanne was only twenty-one years old. So sad!

The color palette that Modigliani uses in his work is muted.  The element of color does not get in the way of the work and allows the viewer to focus on the form.  Emphasis seems to be important in his work as most of the forms are centrally located.

Welcome to AP 2-D Art Studio

I'm very excited about this school year and specifically the AP class.  I hope that you have had a great time this summer and have taken lots and lots of pictures!!  I can't wait to see your photographs.  On the first day of class you will need to have cd's with 1000 images.  You also need a cd with 25 images that you consider to be your best, the ones that best represent the elements and principles of art.  These may not necessarily be your FAVORITE images.  You will also need 6 images, printed and matted on the first day of class.  We will start a critique on day one!

Here are a few images that I took this summer.
